Why a Britain and Ireland land journey surprised Livinia Nixon

WORDS by Livinia Nixon

The Getaway presenter shares how Scenic’s Majestic Britain & Ireland tour transformed celebrated sights, rich history and remarkable stays into a deeply personal experience.

From the Cliffs of Moher to Edinburgh Castle, Britain and Ireland are filled with places you may recognise long before you arrive. For Livinia Nixon, it was the stories behind those places, combined with Scenic’s considered planning and expert guidance, that made the journey feel so memorable.

The stories behind the famous sights

Before departing on Scenic’s Majestic Britain & Ireland land journey, Livinia expected beautiful scenery and a wealth of history. What she did not expect was how clearly the region’s complex past would begin to make sense.

“Every destination had its own story, and I could feel the pieces of the puzzle falling into place,” Livinia says. “Before the trip, I felt that history in that part of the world was overwhelming, with so many disputes, monarchs, political problems and religious battles. Now I feel I have a better understanding.”

Britain and Ireland offer centuries of interconnected stories, and each stop adds another layer. You may begin by admiring a castle, coastal road, or historic city street. Then, with context from those who know the place, you'll understand why it matters.

Expert guides: turning history into connection

A dedicated Scenic Tour Director and knowledgeable local guides help give every destination greater meaning. Rather than simply moving between landmarks, you have the opportunity to ask questions, hear local perspectives and connect the details across the journey.

For Livinia, that made a meaningful difference. “They brought each destination to life through local stories, history and personal knowledge that you simply would not discover on your own,” she says. “It made every stop feel much more interesting.”

This is the difference between seeing a place and understanding it. In Dublin, London and the Scottish Highlands, the stories shared along the way add depth to what is in front of you. History becomes more than dates and names. It becomes a living narrative, experienced through the streets, landscapes and people of each destination.

As Livinia puts it, the journey is “the perfect combination of iconic sights, memorable experiences and luxury, with every detail taken care of so you can simply enjoy the journey”.

Special Stays that deepen the experience

Scenic Special Stays are chosen for their character and setting, creating time and space to experience a destination in a more considered way. On this land journey, Livinia found her stay at Cameron House on Loch Lomond particularly memorable.

“The setting on the shores of Loch Lomond is absolutely breathtaking, and the hotel has such a warm, luxurious feel,” she says. “Waking up to those incredible views over the lake made it a real highlight of the trip.”

A Scenic Special Stay is more than a place to rest between destinations. It becomes part of the story itself, allowing you to wake up surrounded by the landscapes and atmosphere that drew you to Scotland in the first place.

Icons that feel different in person

Some places carry a powerful sense of anticipation. You may have seen them in photographs, films or books, yet standing there can still change how you remember them.

For Livinia, the Cliffs of Moher were especially striking. She arrived on a clear, calm day and watched Atlantic waves meet the dramatic cliff face. “It was spectacular, nature at its finest,” she says.

Elsewhere, the journey offered a different kind of beauty. Livinia was drawn to Bath’s Georgian architecture and Bath Abbey, while the Ring of Kerry became a scenic 180-kilometre drive through towns, changing views and wide-open landscapes.

Edinburgh also left a lasting impression. “The dominant Edinburgh Castle overlooking the city certainly provides a magical backdrop,” Livinia says. She could see why the city inspired J.K. Rowling’s books and imagines returning with her family in winter, when misty cobblestone streets and softly lit shopfronts create another perspective on the Scottish capital.

These experiences are not simply stops on an itinerary. They are the details you recall later: the sound of waves, the scale of a castle and the atmosphere of a city street.

A falconry experience with a fresh perspective

At Scone Palace, the Scenic Enrich falconry display offered Livinia another way to connect with Britain’s heritage. Seeing the birds up close brought the centuries-old tradition into focus, while also highlighting the role these birds play in conservation and the environment.

“I really enjoyed learning about this centuries-old tradition and the important role these birds play in conservation and the environment,” she says. “Their speed, precision and hunting instincts were amazing to watch up close.”

The experience paired history with a contemporary understanding of stewardship. It showed how a long-established practice can still prompt reflection on wildlife, care and the relationship between people and the natural world.

A seasoned traveller’s advice for your first land journey

For those considering Majestic Britain & Ireland as their first Scenic land journey, Livinia recommends arriving ready to explore. A little background reading, or films such as Mary, Queen of Scots and Braveheart, can add another layer to the stories encountered along the way.

Comfortable shoes are also essential for historic streets and cobblestones, while a camera or smartphone will help capture the coastal scenery, architecture, and city views. Above all, she recommends bringing “an appetite for discovering new places”.

With the logistics, accommodation, and many inclusions handled by Scenic, you can focus on the scenery, history, and experiences in front of you. From Loch Lomond’s lakeside setting to London’s energy, Majestic Britain & Ireland invites you to experience celebrated places with time, comfort and a deeper sense of connection.
