Beyond the ocean: Scenic Discovery Yachts unlock unique access to the world’s iconic riversScenic Eclipse II Sails the River Thames to London
Scenic Eclipse II’s recent arrival on the River Thames offered a striking demonstration of how Scenic Discovery Yachts connect ocean discovery with iconic rivers, smaller waterways and city gateways.
Sailing as part of the Wonders of Europe: Bordeaux to London journey, the ultra-luxury Scenic Discovery Yacht travelled from the open waters of Western Europe to Greenwich in the heart of London - combining the space, service and truly all-inclusive ultra-luxury of an ocean yacht with the access and technical precision usually associated with smaller ships.
The transit captures what Scenic Discovery Yachts are designed to do: bring guests closer to the destinations they have travelled to experience, while delivering immersive discovery experiences, dining, wellness and service available throughout their journey.
Advanced Azipod propulsion and forward bow thrusters provide precise manoeuvrability through complex waterways, while GPS Dynamic Positioning allows the Discovery Yacht to maintain position without dropping anchor onto sensitive seabeds. Custom-designed stabilisers, 50 per cent larger than those on comparable ships, enhance comfort across varying sea conditions, and a strengthened Polar Class 6 hull enables safe navigation from tropical coastlines to polar waters.
Across its itineraries, the Scenic Discovery Yachts, Scenic Eclipse and Scenic Eclipse II, are designed to access storied waterways including the Elbe, Guadalquivir, Garonne, Seine, Delaware, York and Cape Fear rivers - linking open ocean with inland destinations in a single seamless journey.
James Griffiths, Scenic Group General Manager - Ocean, said the Thames transit was a clear expression of what Scenic Discovery Yachts were engineered to achieve.
“Scenic Eclipse II cruising along the Thames will be a powerful visual moment, but it also tells a much bigger story about the capability of the Scenic Discovery Yachts. Our propulsion, bow thruster and dynamic positioning systems give our Captains the precision and flexibility to access a much wider range of waterways and destinations.
“Our teams bring vast experience operating the Scenic Discovery Yachts in some of the world’s most complex and remote environments. That expertise allows us to bring every capability together - from itinerary design and navigation to Zodiac operations, helicopter experiences and submersible dives. This is not technology for its own sake. It allows us to bring guests closer to the landscapes, cultures and places they have travelled to discover, while delivering the truly all-inclusive ultra-luxury Scenic experience.”
Scenic Eclipse and Scenic Eclipse II accommodate no more than 228 guests, across 114 all-verandah suites and offer a close to 1:1 crew-to-guest ratio. Their discovery capabilities are supported by experienced operational teams and specialist Discovery Team members, who help shape itineraries and lead immersive experiences around the world.
That platform for discovery extends above, across and beneath the water. On select voyages, guests can explore coastlines and remote landing sites by Zodiac and kayak, while two on board Airbus H130-T2 helicopters^ provide perspectives that cannot be experienced from the coastline on other ships.
Designed for up to six guests plus the pilot, the helicopters feature expansive windows and panoramic visibility for flightseeing over coastlines, landscapes and polar regions. Where regulations and conditions permit, they can also provide access to remote landing locations that would otherwise be difficult or impossible to reach. In a further expression of Scenic's truly all-inclusive philosophy, helicopter experiences≈ are included for guests booking select 2027 and 2028 voyages under Scenic's Super Early Bird offer.
Below the surface, Scenic’s custom-built Scenic Neptune submersibles^ descend up to 100 metres, offering panoramic views of marine environments like Antarctica, the Caribbean and South Pacific, that would otherwise remain unseen. Together, the helicopters^, submersibles^ and Discovery excursions allow guests to experience a destination from multiple perspectives within a single journey.
Guests can also see the Discovery Yacht’s navigation technology in action through Scenic’s unique open bridge policy, meeting the Captain and navigational team, gaining insights into the systems used to operate across different waterways and conditions.
The Thames arrival comes as Scenic prepares for the next evolution of its Scenic Discovery Yachts fleet. Launching in April 2028, Scenic Ikon will welcome up to 270 guests across 135 all-verandah suites and feature 15 distinct culinary experiences, a two-level 1,700sqm Senses Rejuvenation Spa and next-generation battery technology designed to reduce emissions, noise and vibration.
Its inaugural season will span 110 ports, 21 countries and 26 new destinations across Europe, the Mediterranean, the Aegean, Egypt, Africa, Antarctica, the Falkland Islands and the Chilean Fjords.
