The Ghan, Kakadu, Raja Ampat & Papua New Guinea - Cruise & Land Journey
The Ghan, Kakadu, Raja Ampat & Papua New Guinea - Cruise & Land Journey

From Australia’s Red Heart to the Blue Horizons of Indonesia and Papua New Guinea
Cross Australia from south to north aboard The Ghan before continuing by sea through the island worlds of Indonesia and Papua New Guinea to Cairns. From outback landscapes and Kakadu’s escarpments to reef-fringed shores, rainforest-covered islands and remote coastal communities, this journey reveals a striking contrast of scenery, cultures and experiences.

Begin with one of Australia’s great rail journeys, travelling aboard The Ghan from Adelaide to Darwin through the ochre landscapes of the Red Centre and into the tropical north. Along the way, time in Alice Springs, Nitmiluk Gorge, Kakadu and Litchfield brings you closer to the scale and stillness of the outback, with ancient rock formations, broad floodplains and waterfalls shaping your experience of the Northern Territory. In Darwin, board Scenic Eclipse II and turn towards the islands and reefs of the Coral Triangle. Sailing through Indonesia, West Papua and Papua New Guinea, the focus shifts to clear waters, limestone islets, village life and richly diverse marine environments, particularly in Raja Ampat, whose reefs are recognised among the most biodiverse on Earth. Days here may bring opportunities to snorkel over coral gardens, cruise by Zodiac through sheltered inlets or simply take in the changing colours of sea and sky from the deck. Further east, Papua New Guinea introduces another layer of discovery through remote coastlines and long-held cultural traditions. Together, the rail and sea elements create a journey defined by contrast: desert and rainforest, outback and archipelago, inland stillness and open water, all connected by Scenic’s considered style of travel
