Catriona Rowntree has spent decades travelling the world and sharing its wonders with Australian audiences, yet Canada keeps drawing her back. Recently, she joined a Scenic luxury land journey through this spectacular country, taking in the dramatic beauty of the Canadian Rockies, the vibrant energy of Vancouver and the wildlife-rich surrounds of Whistler. Here, she recalls the stand‑out moments that made this journey feel both warmly familiar and completely unforgettable.

Magic through every season
Catriona first travelled to Canada more than three decades ago, and the country continues to draw her back. Each visit brings fresh discoveries, from evolving cultural experiences to new culinary openings, yet the essentials she loves most never change. She is still "mesmerised by Mother Nature, astounded by the diversity and delighted by the locals". She also finds that tourism is forever evolving there, with new experiences opening up, embracing the magnificent mountains, the rich culture and local food, making it always a good idea to return.
Canada’s seasonal character is another reason she believes it rewards repeat visits. In her words, "Year-round there is always something to thrill; this country endlessly delivers." Whether it is spring’s soft light, the long days of summer, the bold colours of autumn or snow-dusted peaks, each time of year reveals a different side of this remarkable landscape.

Whistler: more than just mountain thrills
Whistler is known for its awe-inspiring landscapes, but for Catriona, there were two standout surprises beyond the scenery. "I loved to find young Australians everywhere," she laughs. "Their sunny, Aussie disposition shines through." The result is a welcoming atmosphere, complemented by the locals, and impeccable service that feels both international and familiar.
Wildlife encounters added another layer of magic to Whistler. "We saw bears everywhere, even at the bus stop (apparently they love the dandelions that grow around the base)." While bears are seasonal, she notes that due to a great berry season last year, this year they’re thriving. “We kept our distance, and it was adorable to watch them." Scenic guests can also learn more about the bears on an exclusive experience led by black bear expert Michael Allen, who has been studying these fascinating creatures for decades.
Ultimately, it's this combination of village charm, local character and spontaneous and curated moments with nature that makes this region so compelling.

Saying “Yes” to new experiences
From ziplining high above the trees to guided bear spotting and cultural learning at the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre, Catriona loved how the Whistler region encouraged openness and curiosity. "The constant learning you achieve, simply by signing up to these experiences, being open-minded and having fun in the process," she says, was a highlight.
"There are many experiences to choose from, just say ‘yes!’ and cherish every moment", she recommends. Scenic’s curated Scenic Freechoice activities offer a selection of included experiences that have already been chosen for their quality, insight and enjoyment, so guests can narrow down by choosing what suits their interests, desired pace and mood.

Vancouver: food, culture and local stories
In Vancouver, Catriona discovered a city where food and culture intertwine on almost every block. "This is like the United Nations of food on one street," she says, emphasising how the diversity of flavours is underpinned by regional produce. "The point of difference is so much local produce, so many great restaurants, in close proximity to each other."
Guided exploration added an extra dimension to her time here. She gives particular praise to her Scenic guide: "I also need to give a shoutout to my Scenic guide, Bronson, he was so knowledgeable and kind." For Catriona, the heart of a walking tour lies in these personal connections. "Often the highlight of a walking tour is the local stories and characters you remember long after the walk has ended." Scenic’s use of local guides throughout Canada ensures guests hear these stories from people who live and breathe the destination every day.

Squamish Canyon: a forest immersion
The new Squamish Canyon experience, included on select Scenic itineraries from 2027, made a deep impression on Catriona. "Have you heard of ‘forest bathing’? This is the epitome, and nature truly does lift your spirits." Walking among towering trees, crossing viewpoints and listening to the sounds of the river, she felt a profound sense of calm and uplift.
What moved her most was the story behind this protected landscape. "I loved the background story to this experience, the local who saved the trees from logging and developers so generations could forever experience this natural beauty." She describes the experience as "not too long, offers a great cafe and all the good things about Canada in one beautiful space." For Scenic guests, this thoughtful inclusion brings together nature, conservation, and gentle exploration in a single memorable outing.

The drive through the Rockies
Catriona’s love for the Canadian Rockies was reinforced by experiencing it with Scenic. "This part of Canada brings to life the theory 'it’s not about the destination, but the journey' as you travel through The Rockies, eyes peeled and constantly in awe."
Wide valleys, mirrored lakes and rugged peaks unfold around every bend, turning travel days into a series of quiet wonder moments. "Big picture, is incredibly beautiful, then you spot a little wildlife, or marvel over the bold colour of the leaves. Mother Nature is completely showing off in this pocket of the world." Scenic’s comfortable coach travel and considered pacing allow guests to sit back and simply watch this ever-changing panorama.

Why a handcrafted Scenic land journey
For many travellers, long-haul holidays are cherished, and Catriona feels strongly that this is where Scenic makes a real difference. She knows how much time independent travel can demand, and why having everything organised becomes such a luxury in itself. "Your time is precious, it’s worth feeling organised, you want to be with locals, and you need to maximise every moment of your holiday," she says.
Scenic’s fully escorted land journeys in Canada feature smaller groups, with a maximum of 36 guests, so guests travel with like-minded people without feeling rushed or crowded. With curated itineraries, local guides and experienced Tour Directors, each day unfolds with transport, timings and access already carefully arranged. "Scenic Tour Directors are central to what makes travelling this way so rewarding. You make friends with them, you swap stories, and they truly care about what they do. Their care factor is 11/10."
